Spring 1294
An empty treasury and a proposal
Ṣadr al-Dīn Zanjānī, the ṣāḥib-dīwān, puts the idea of paper money to the Ilkhanid court. To learn how the Chinese system actually worked, he goes to Bolad Chingsang — the Great Khan’s resident representative at the court, whom Rashīd al-Dīn calls the finest authority on Mongol history alive.
“And this man also was so extravagant that in a very short space of time he exhausted the treasures of the kingdom of Kaijatu. […] Then he began to think out vain imaginings — that he would make new money.”
